iPad mini's $329 Starting Price May Be Due To Low Touchscreen Yields
Citing industry sources, DigiTimes claims that the iPad mini's relatively high entry price is due to the low yield rates of the touchscreens used in the device. Apple is reportedly using a new touch screen technology in the iPad mini called "GF Ditto," (also known as GF2) which enables the device to be much thinner and lighter. Apple has posted revenue of $36 billion and net quarterly profit of $8.2 billion, or $8.67 per diluted share in the fourth fiscal quarter of 2012 (third calendar quarter), compared to revenue of $28.27 billion and net profit of $6.62 billion, or $7.05 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Sprint – Apple’s iPhone carrier partner in the US announced their third quarter financial results earlier today. They’ve reported net operating revenue of $7.3 billion during the quarter, an increase of nearly 6 percent year-over-year. The 3rd generation iPad came with a built-in 42.5-watt-hour rechargeable lithium-polymer battery, compared to iPad’s 25-watt-hour rechargeable lithium-polymer battery. It was a whopping 70% increase in the capacity of the battery. Apple engineers were forced to pack a significantly larger battery in the iPad 3, which came with a faster dual-core processor, Retina Display and support for 4G LTE networks, to offer the 10-hour battery life.
