U.S. Carriers Unlikely To Support iPhone 5′s Wideband Audio
At yesterday’s iPhone event, Apple’s Vice President of Worldwide Marketing had announced that iPhone 5 supports wideband audio, which is commonly known by carriers as HD voice. It extends the frequency range of audio signals transmitted, resulting in  crisper word clarity and more natural sounding speech. Schiller had briefly mentioned that the feature will be supported by 20 carriers worldwide at launch. Unlike AT&T, Verizon’s taking a much harsher approach towards unlimited data subscribers. The carrier’s reps told 9to5Mac that existing customers, except those who are on unlimited data, can continue to use their older data plans and avail the subsidised iPhone 5 price. Existing unlimited data customers have two choices, either purchase the device subsidised and lose the unlimited plan or continue to use unlimited data and pay full price for the iPhone 5. AT&T’s press release announcing the iPhone 5 notes that current subscribers can continue to use their existing data plans with the new iPhone 5. They won’t be forced to choose AT&T’s newly announced shared data plans. Subscribers who are grandfathered-in to the now-extinct unlimited data plan can continue to enjoy unlimited data on their iPhones, even if they upgrade using AT&T’s subsidised pricing.
